behind the paintings

I just finished a painting class! I took it at a local community college for cheaper prices and an easier "A," which isn't to say I didn't learn anything. We weren't quite as prolific as we might have been at MCAD, since we basically didn't have any homework. Nevertheless, I'm proud of my finished pieces. All the completed paintings (and details) are in a separate post.

The first painting we did was a still life in monochromatic color. I was like, weirdly into it at first, because I drew sooo many still lives this past year, and I was pretty eager to dive right in and...show off a little.

As you can tell, I vastly overestimated my ability.

Golden Haze

I've been hoarding disposable cameras since the summer after I graduated from high school. I'd only developed one, though, because I never finish anything. Many of the cameras are half full, some are lost, and one is somewhere in a Los Angeles drugstore, waiting to be picked up.

This summer I've been trying to do a lot of art—a lot of different kinds of art—to independently enrich myself. I tend to get very anxious and overwhelmed in school, and towards the end of the semester/quarter I always stress myself out and procrastinate, but my spring/summer/winter breaks are usually very productive. I've gone through a whole disposable camera (and actually developed it!) in the last two weeks. It was an underwater disposable, though I never got a chance to use it underwater. I took it with me everywhere I went, mostly photographing my neighborhood and houses during after-dinner walks. Out of the 27 exposures, only ten or so turned out remotely interesting. Anyway, here are some of them:

I got into a car accident this summer. This is my mom looking at the demolished remnants of what used to be.

For some reason a bunch of my photos were partially obscured by my finger. I don't even know how this happened.

This is my favorite photo in the set.

Figs(ure)

My first time experimenting with color and figure drawing. I used crayola markers and micron pens. Some are better than others and I still have the feeling that I have no idea what I'm doing.

Minnehaha in the Summer

Some of you may recall I went to Minnehaha Falls with some friends this past winter. And by some, I mean two of you. I went again this week with some more friends (and some of the same friends). These were all taken with my iPhone, though I did bring along a disposable. Hopefully I'll get that developed soon!

Smokebomb

July 4th festivities with my boyfriend, my boyfriend's family, and their family friends. It was very Minnesotan, very white, very delicious. We set off smokebombs and fireworks in their driveway, and then we gathered on their porch and sat in silence, watching the Round Lake fireworks cover the sky and reflect in the backyard pond.
