January Favorites

Each month I will be posting a list of my favorite things — general things that I experienced or saw or read or whatever. Things I was inspired by and will become a part of my personal collection of interesting, random things that I can draw upon when I want to seem cool or erudite.

Parks and Recreation

I have been watching a lot of Parks and Rec. I think I finished upwards of four seasons in about two and a half weeks. (Yes, I know I'm a little late to the party.)

Edouard Manet

One of my favorite painters from history. I first fell in love with Modernism as an artistic movement two years ago when I took a class at UCLA with art historian George Baker, who was probably the best teacher I have ever had, ever, in my life. I didn't really like Manet before, since I thought his work seemed unfinished and boring, but Baker was so extremely passionate about Manet (and about art history in general) and I learned so much from him.

This quarter, at MCAD, I'm currently taking an art history course in Modernism onwards. We just finished our lecture on Manet and the Impressionists last week, and my love for him was reignited.

Al Jarnow

We learned about him as a stop-motion animator in my media class, and I did a presentation on him. Here's an amazing documentary on his work:

Kowalski's

I find grocery stores, particularly my local Kowalski's, to be so enchanting. The beautiful, well-lit displays of cheese and salami get me every time.

Abasin, Colorado

My family and I visited my dad in Colorado over winter break. We didn't do much together, besides buy furniture and watch popular comedies, so I got a chance to read a lot of books and browse a lot of internet. My dad, brother, and I, however, did get a chance to ski for a day in Abasin, Colorado. Unfortunately, the fun didn't last — my brother faceplanted and ended up bleeding all over the slopes from his nose and inner lips. On a related note, I also got pretty severe whiplash, but that set in few hours later, only after we had finished skiing.

Anyway, I love mountains, and I love wintry landscapes. I didn't get a chance to snap too many pictures since iPhones apparently stop functioning in the bitter cold...unlike humans. Now who's man and who's machine????

Snapped this photo of my brother and some snow bros at the top of the mountain, where it was strangely the warmest.

My skis and my brother's skis.

And here are some bonus progression photos of a beautiful neon pink sunset I saw on the the drive to Colorado!

I did take a bunch of videos of us wandering around Denver's capitol building and a few on the slopes itself. I've been procrastinating editing them, however, but maybe I'll finish that within the month. Who knows.
